During our Fieldday this year, we stayed on the air under the open sky until late at night.
By August, temperatures had already dropped – and I realized I didn’t own a proper mid-season outdoor jacket.
After a few chilly hours at the radio, I decided it was time to fix that.
That same day, Gunnar (DA6GUN) joined us, wearing a vest with a custom velcro patch showing his callsign and a personal design.
That small detail immediately inspired me – practical, individual, and just right for portable ham radio operations. Every guest would recognize me in the future.

So, I ordered a new outdoor jacket and designed my own custom patches.
Mine shows our Land Rover Defender with rooftop tent, my callsign DL8YDP, the DARC logo, and my local DOK.
It’s a subtle but personal way to combine identity and functionality in the field.
If you’d like to create your own patches, here you find links to the suppliers* and my Photoshop template for the round patch.
A small detail that makes a big difference – another example of how ham radio, creativity, and outdoor adventure come together perfectly.
